Sublimation Dye Application Instructions – Heat Press Guide
1. Prepare Your Substrate
- Use polyester fabric (65%+ polyester) or sublimation-coated blanks for the best color transfer.
- Pre-press garments for 5–10 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
-
Clean mugs, tumblers, or other hard blanks of lint, dust, or oil for a smooth print surface.
- Always ensure your blanks are rated for sublimation printing.
2. Align and Tape
- Place your sublimation transfer sheet face down on the blank.
- Use heat-resistant tape to hold the transfer firmly in place.
- Prevent ghosting by keeping the transfer from shifting during the press.
- Cover with butcher paper or a Teflon sheet to protect your heat press from ink transfer.
3. Heat Press Settings for Sublimation
- Set your heat press between 385–400 °F (195–205 °C).
- Apply medium to firm pressure for consistent ink transfer.
- Press for 45–60 seconds for shirts, or 180–200 seconds for mugs and tumblers.
- Check your substrate manufacturer’s guidelines for ideal settings.
4. Transfer & Cooling
- Once pressing is complete, remove the paper carefully while it’s still warm.
- Allow the product to cool fully before touching or packaging.
- Inspect the design to ensure sharp lines and even color saturation.
5. Pro Tips for Perfect Sublimation
- Always test a sample press before production.
- Use a lint roller on fabrics to avoid stray fibers in prints.
- Avoid cotton materials — sublimation only bonds with polyester or coated surfaces.
- Store your transfers in a cool, dry place to prevent fading before use.
6. Recommended Sublimation Settings
- Polyester Shirt: 400 °F, 60 seconds, medium-firm pressure
- Coated Mug or Tumbler: 380–400 °F, 180–200 seconds, medium pressure
- Aluminum or Hardboard: 385 °F, 60 seconds, medium pressure
